Kineton Primary Shape Gang - Romans

This page has been created with Class 3 - click here for more pictures of Class 3 with a Roman Soldier!!

When did the Army use a Tortoise?

When Roman soldiers were advancing towards the enemy , they did a special trick called ' the tortoise'. They held their shields high above their heads to make a sort of shell. This protected them from enemy spears
- but made it hard for them to see where they were going!

How did Roman Soldiers Dress?

In warmer parts of the empire, soldiers didn't wear much under their tunics. But in chilly places they wore thich woollen underpants just like the locals.... was it hot or cold in Kineton? ( clue: He has his underpants on!!! )

Injured soldiers bandage their wounds with cobwebs soaked in vinegar. This helped the soldiers, but wasn't so good for the spiders!!
How Big was the Roman Empire?

The Romans were people who cam from Rome, in Italy. About 2,000 years ago they became so powerful that they began to conquer the lands around them. By AD100 they ruled a huge empire, and were one of the mightiest peoples in the ancient world.
