Kineton Primary Shape Gang -  Rainbows

When the sun comes out before the rain goes that's the time for making rainbows ....

Gemma Moon loves Rainbows but she wants to know how they are made!

We need 2 ingredients!

  • Sunshine

  • Rain

Most light passes straight through a raindrop because water is transparent but as the light goes through the drop some reaches the back at such an angle that it reflects off it.

The white light from the sun is a mixture of all the colours.

When the sunbeam enters the drop of rain it is 'refracted' just like when it enters a prism and we get a Rainbow!

When Searching for Rainbows - Look away from the Sun!

The best times to see a rainbow are on a warm day in the early morning after sunrise or late afternoon before sunset. If it's too cold and the raindrops start to form ice crystals in the air then a rainbow will not show; the drops need to be liquid to refract and reflect the light correctly. If you want to go rainbow hunting then try a day with mixed rain and bright periods. Look away from the sun. To see a rainbow you must be standing with the sun behind you.

What are the colours in the Rainbow and how can I remember them?

  Red
  Orange
  Yellow
  Green
  Blue
  Indigo
  Violet
Ozzy Oval says......

The easiest way to remember the colours and their order is to make up a sentence starting with the first letter of every colour e.g.

Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain

Why don't you have a go?
