Food Week - 2nd October - 6th October
2006
|
Dear
Parents
We
will be holding a “Food Week” from Monday 2nd
October to Friday 6th
October. Children will be learning about various aspects of food
across a variety of curriculum areas – we will be discussing what makes
a healthy diet, how food is grown/produced and transported, how much it
costs to buy. We will be tasting food from other countries and cultures,
reading and writing recipes, making our own food, sketching fruit and
vegetables, etc, etc.
During
the week, a number of events and visitors have been planned. At 3
pm on Monday 2nd October Tracy Bainton (school nurse) and a
colleague will share ideas with parents about how to prepare a healthy and
appetising lunch box, please bring any ideas you have too. Veronica Quinn
from Warwickshire County Caterers will also be present to talk to you
about recent changes to school dinners and cafeteria choices and to answer
any questions you may have on these issues. We will take care of any
school-age children until the talk is finished.
On
Tuesday 3rd October
we will be having Harvest Festival services at the church (
9.30am
– KS1,
11am
– KS2) which parents are welcome to attend. We are asking children
to bring either fresh fruit or vegetables, tins or packets, a cake or loaf
of bread. These items will be sold in a Harvest Produce
Sale
at
3pm
that day and the proceeds will go to the charity Food
Aid which helps to provide solutions to hunger and poverty in thirty of
the world’s poorest countries. Gym club will take place outside that day
– if it is raining I’m afraid it will have to be cancelled. We would
appreciate some help in preparing for the sale (setting up tables,
packaging food into hampers) – please let us know if you are available.
Other
visitors for the week will include an organic farmer to talk to some of
the KS2 children and Eddie Stephens who cooks for the GB Olympic sailing
team. If you have any other contacts or would like to be involved yourself
please let us know! We would welcome any parents or friends of the school
to come and talk to or cook with classes or smaller groups of children
during the week.
We
have decided to have a fancy dress
theme for the final day – Friday 6th October - on the theme
of food. In return for wearing fancy dress children are asked to bring in
an item for the tombola for the Autumn Fayre
which takes place on Saturday 14th
October. The Friends are going to compile a recipe book to be sold to parents – please send in a favourite
recipe before Friday 6th
October. The book will be illustrated by the children.
As
well as Food Week it is also “Walk
to School Week” – please encourage your children to walk or cycle
to school ( at least some of the way if you live at some distance from the
school) – we will be giving out badges and certificates for effort.
This
is the first time we have held a Food Week – please help to make it a
success by supporting our events!
Yours
sincerely,
I
plan to attend the talk on healthy lunchboxes and school meals on Monday 2nd
October. Number of seats required ________________
I
am / am not available to help with the produce sale on Tuesday 3rd
October.
