Dear
Parents Welcome back to a new year. I
hope that you had an enjoyable Christmas and a happy holiday. This term,
as you know, is the last term before SATS Week that starts on 14th
May, after Easter. We shall be revising subjects that the children
have visited before, as well as work on new topics. Some parents have
found helpful to get revision guides to study from at home. There are
varieties to choose from in shops like WH Smith. If your child has access
to a computer at home I would highly recommend the website www.bbc.co.uk/schools/revisewise/.
Our residential visit to Marle Hall for 5 days is also happening this term
on Monday 12th March. Details about this trip and the date for
a meeting will be sent out later. In English the children will
be practising their handwriting, spelling and grammar. The children will
also be reading and writing a range of texts that will include narrative,
persuasive writing, formal language and poetry. ‘Speaking and
Listening’ is an important part of the curriculum and we shall be
incorporating these skills into our lessons. In Maths the children will be
covering a range of subjects. Number topics will include place value,
ordering, rounding, the four rules, fractions and decimals. Being able to
calculate problems mentally is an important part of learning Maths.
Knowledge of multiplication tables will help to do number work more
confidently. We are continuing to have a ‘push’ on tables this term
throughout the school. Other Maths subjects to be studied this term are
measures, data handling and 2D shape. Again, the children will be
receiving homework and your help in ensuring that homework is regularly
completed is greatly appreciated. Maths and Literacy (except for the
first half term) homework will be set as early as possible during the
week, to be handed in on Monday. A separate letter has been sent
home giving details about the history project for the first half of this
term. In History this half term we
shall be learning about the Britain Since the 1930’s, this follows on
from last term’s topic of World War II. After half term the Geography
focus shall be Rivers. In Science we shall be
revising all the topics that the children have done in KS2 as well as
studying ‘Changing Circuits’, ‘Micro-organisms’
and ‘More About Dissolving’. There will be opportunities to devise and
carry out investigations. ‘Keeping The Rules’ with
reference to Buddhism and Christianity, and ‘Freedom’ with reference
to Judaism and Christianity will be the focus topics in RE this term. PE will include Games and
Gymnastics. In Games the children will develop netball and hockey skills.
Gymnastics is based on the theme ‘Counter-Balance and Counter-Tension'.
‘Fit for Learning’ will continue throughout the term. Please ensure
that your child has his/her PE kit in school at all times, suitable for
both indoor and outdoor use, as it may be that PE will take place other
times during the week. For safety reasons jewellery should not be worn. ’People in Action’ will
be the theme in art. The children will examine work by various artists and
use this as a basis for their own artwork. The children will be
increasing their word processing skills as well as using the
‘Powerpoint’ package to explore its higher functions. The children
will also be researching topics on the Internet using Key Words to answer
specific questions. Later in the term the
children will be evaluating, designing and making their own purse/wallet
or bag for Design and Technology. PSHE
(Personal, Social and Health Education) will focus on ‘Substance Use and
Misuse’, within the context of healthy and safer lifestyles. If
you have any queries or concerns about your child's progress or wish to
discuss some other aspect of school life please do not hesitate to contact
us to make an appointment. Yours
sincerely Mrs Laura Hall Mrs Margaret Pollard To see newsletter from Autumn 2006 please click here To see newsletter from Autumn 2005 please click here |
