Dear
Parents, I
hope you and your family had an enjoyable Christmas and that your child is
keen to return to another busy term at school. In
English, the class will look at performance poetry, myths, legends and
traditional tales. We will be working to improve joined handwriting and,
hopefully, more children will start to use ink. In grammar, we will look
at the use of commas, tenses, adverbs and adjectives.. Reading
books will again be brought home every night and these should be recorded
in your child’s journal. Please encourage and hear your child read every
night, even if only for a short time. I would suggest 15 to 20 minutes.
You can further encourage your child to write a few sentences or draw a
picture about the chapter or book they have read. In school, children will
be in small reading groups and each group will be given a guided reading
session at least once a week. The
children will continue to work in Maths groups within the class, each
group working within the Numeracy framework. You can help your child by
encouraging them to learn the times tables. The children should already
know their 2x, 5x and 10x tables. If not known by heart, these need to be
practised. By the end of Year 3, they should know their 3x, 4x and 6x
tables as well. They need to have a good working knowledge of their tables
by the start of Year 4 if they are to make the required progress. In
Art, we will be using our imagination. After watching clips from fantasy
videos and looking at Dali-esque pictures, children will develop their own
picture in the style of Dali. In
Science, we will look at light and shadows until half-term, then we will
study rocks and soil. Linked to this study, I hope to be able to take the
class to the Crosshands quarry, near Chipping Norton, where we will go on
fossil hunt. P.E.
will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. We will also be using
the ‘Fit for Learning’ programme every day; quick sessions that last
about 10 minutes to stimulate the children and help learning. The children
will need both indoor and outdoor P.E. clothing, particularly when the
weather gets colder. This should be clearly labelled with your child’s
name and kept in school at all times. In
Geography, we will look at a village in In
PHSE, we will be studying citizenship, looking at rules and
responsibilities for communities. In
RE, we will look at Christianity and Judaism, looking at daily life, moral
choices and the 10 commandments. Finally, in ICT we will look at
manipulating sound and exploring simulations linked to Art. Homework
will be set on Monday (Literacy) and Wednesday (Maths). Monday’s work
should be returned on Wednesday and Wednesday’s by the following Monday. As
ever, if you have any worries please do not hesitate to contact me. Best
wishes to you and your family for the New Year. Denise
